Speech-to-Text Showdown: Wispr flow vs. Mac Whispers vs Google Keyboard
Speech-to-Text Showdown: Comparing Whisperflow, Mac Whispers, and Google Docs
Speech-to-text technology has revolutionised the way we interact with our devices. Whether you're a writer looking to transcribe ideas quickly, a student taking notes, or simply someone who prefers speaking over typing, having an efficient speech-to-text app can significantly boost your productivity.
In this blog post, we're putting three popular speech-to-text applications to the test: Wispr flow, Mac Whispers, and Google Docs' built-in voice typing.
The Contenders:
- Wispr flow. https://www.flowvoice.ai/
- A powerful speech-to-text app known for its impressive speed and accuracy.

- Ideal for professionals who require quick and reliable transcriptions.
- Paid at $12 a month

- A dedicated application for macOS users.
- Seamlessly integrates with the Mac ecosystem.
- Provides accurate transcriptions with a user-friendly interface.
- One off fee as it runs off your device.
- Google Docs Voice Typing

- Surprising accuracy for a free tool and convenient for quick notes.
- Briliant on Android.
The Test:
Just reading this aloud and see how each one handles it.
This is a little test of speech to text and how it performs with 3 popular apps. I'm using Wispr Flow, MacWhisper, and the Google one that's built into Google Docs.
Results:
Whisperflow
- Speed: Lightning-fast transcription with minimal lag.
- Accuracy: Excellent. but did change a word. It changed popular to different.
- Notes: Wispr flow stood out for its speed, making it feel almost conversational.
Mac Whispers
- Speed: Slower than Wispr flow but still OK. I have an m1 Mac Pro base model, so maybe a more modern computer would be quicker.
- Accuracy: Excellent.
- Notes: Integrates well with macOS, offering a smooth user experience for Mac users.
Google Docs Voice Typing
- Speed: Adequate for most tasks, with a slight lag noticeable.
- Accuracy: Excellent
- Notes: The convenience of not needing additional software is a big plus but can only use in Google Docs.
Conclusion:
All three apps offer valuable features, but they cater to different needs:
- Whisperflow is ideal if you want the fastest and money is no issue.
- Mac Whispers is perfect for those that want a one off fee. It has other features I have no explored yet.
- Google Docs Voice Typing is a fantastic free option for quick transcriptions without the need for extra installations but it limited to Google Docs on Mac. Google really need to release the GBoard on Mac. I would use for sure.
Final Thoughts:
Speech-to-text technology is continually evolving, and these tools make it easier than ever to convert spoken words into written text efficiently. Your choice will depend on your specific needs, whether it's speed, accuracy, integration, or cost. For Windows users, the build in one to Windows is very good too. (Windows + H) but I do most of my work on a Mac nowadays.
