One of the advantages of being my own is boss is being able to buy my own IT equipment.  I never skimp on IT.  If you are going to be sat at computer 8 hours a day, you may as well get the best you can afford.  If your employer doesn't provide you with a fast computer and multiple screens, they are wasting money. 

Labour costs are way more than IT costs.  A decent laptop off ebay need not cost more than £250 for something that will be good for most office work.

How to test your Speedometer score. 

As most stuff is in the cloud nowadays, fast browser performance is essential. Go to Speedometer 2.1 (browserbench.org)

Open it in Chrome as a guest to there are no extensions that could be slowing it down.  Close all other programmes and make sure its plugged in to power and if using a laptop, its set to maximum performance.  Run the test. 

If you get less than 100, you have a good case for a computer upgrade. 

 

This is from my Lenovo T480 which you can get off ebay now for around £250.  If you can afford it, an m1 macbook air will get a score of around 350.  Thats with the base model which is about £900 off Amazon. The m1 Macbook Pro 14 which I also have gets a very similar score.  If you are mainly doing stuff in your browser, you will not notice the difference, so a macbook air is the best machine to get for price/ performance.
